Interpretation tour "Roots of Dalmatia"
The interpretive tour Roots of Dalmatia begins at the Old Olive Tree and introduces participants to the spatial and temporal framework of Kaštela. From nature we get fruits that the human hand ennobles and applies in everyday life. Kaštela is the cradle of the production of extra virgin olive oil and top wines. The most famous is, of course, Kaštelanski Crljenak – Zinfandel, but there are also less
known varieties: Babica and Tribljan. The ancient Greeks said, “Where there is oil and wine, there is culture.”
The walk also follows the development of the Ferro Tower, the fortress of Stafileo Ćipiko to defend the fields and peasants from Turkish attacks and the numerous invaders who passed through this area. The key role was played by the (Croatian – maka bi možda Croatian jer su talijanski, tj grčki plemići) noble families Ćipiko and Stafileo, who preserved life in this area by building fortifications and defending the village. The nobles had a difficult task – to
maintain a balance between the Venetian government and the Croatian people. Because the roots of Dalmatia are not only the roots from nature, they are also the roots from society.
The fruits of nature, the tastes of the Mediterranean are very important in the Christian faith and the Church, which gave strength to the weary people. Tradition and customs often disappear after many centuries, but thanks to spirituality, oil and wine have great symbolism and power in the 21st century, and this is interpreted in front of the church of St. Peter the Apostle in Kaštel Novi. On this walk, participants have the opportunity to taste extra virgin olive oil, get acquainted with the process from the ground to the table, re-examine their roots, reflect on their heritage, spirituality and historical development that has left its mark on today’s life in Dalmatia and Kaštela.
After the walk, we head by car or van to the Biblical Garden of Our Lady of Stomorija where we take a short walk and explain the monument to the Kaštela lineage and the peasant. Nearby is the vineyard of the Kuzmanić family, which will welcome guests with traditional products and offer their premium white and red wines.
